Giurdignano

Description

Giurdignano is a town of approx. 2000 inhabitants and is situated at short distance from capo d'Otranto, the most Eastern strip of the Italian peninsula.

Known as the "Megalith Garden of Italy" it presents a highest concentration of dolmen and menhirs in Italy. It counts more than 25, of which most examples, have become part of the houses and buildings.

Rests of a Roman settlement with a necropolis have been traced in the Cantalupi district. The territory also offered shelter to the Greek Byzantine monks, which have left traces such as a series of frescos in the cavern of San Paolo and the ruins of the Basilica of Centoporte, that have been included in the most important Benedectine Convent of the Salento region.

During the Middle Ages the town was dominated and ruled by important feudal Families: Orsini del Balzo and Alfarano Capece.

Worth a visit of the XVIII century, are the Mother Church and the Column of Saint Rocco, patron saint of the town.
