The town's name seems to be composed of the following two words: "Vicus" (village) and "Athesis" (ancient name of the river Adige), although this hypothesis is not based on certain data, since the river flows far from the village, but still it is unanimously considered the prevailing historical point of view.
Vigasio is a municipality in the province of Verona, located in an area rich in springs.
The area was inhabited since ancient times: traces allow to attest that in here rose some Celt settlements. Like other areas of the Veneto Region, later it was colonized by the Romans, who erected several major infrastructures and so it became a transit point with a certain strategic importance, placed on the road that led from Mantua to Verona. The perseverance and determination of the Benedictine monks, who reclaimed from the marshes, lands made suitable for agriculture, such as rice cultivation. The first documents that attest the existence of the center date back to 1014, a period when the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, arranged the sale of the Abbey of San Zeno. Vigasio leaped to the headlines during the clashes between Frederick Barbarossa and the city ofVerona. Also famous because in the first half of the XIII century it was proclaimed municipality and edited its own status.
Attractions:
- the XVII century Sanctuary of Our Lady in Campagna Magra. The name derives from the fact that the area, on which it stands, originally used for crops, became infertile. This small building features a façade in Classical style. The portal, surmounted by a small gable is flanked by two rectangular windows. At the ends of the prospectus, it is possible to
admire two semi-columns that are combined with the tympanum above thanks to a frame. On top there are three pinnacles;
- the XV century simple looking Church of San Zeno with its baptistery of the second half of the XV century;
- the XVIII century Church of St. Michael on the road to Isolalta;
- the XVIII century Villa Giusti, in Baroque-style,
consists of three parts: one older central one and two side ones built in more recent times. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden equipped with barns for the shelter of farming tools;
- the XVIII century Villa Carnevali;
- Villa Malaspina.
