Montalto Pavese

Description

A municipality of the Oltrepò Pavese area. The first documents, that report the existence of Montalto Pavese, date from the X century, when these lands were under the control of the monastery of Santa Maria delle Cacce. In 1164 it was under the control of Pavia and the fief was ceded to the Belcredi family. Under the rule of the Sforza in 1447, it became part of fief of Mantua of the Strozzi family. Even after this change, the Belcredi still remained the richest family of Maontalto and were the owners of the castle. In 1617 the fief was sold to the Taverna Family, Counts of Landriano, but in 1658 the Belcredi bought it back, keeping it until the end of feudalism in 1797. In the meanwhile the feud was elevated to Marquisate.
Among the sites of interest, not to miss:
- The castle, located 466 meters above sea level, is built of stone and brick on a plan: long approximately 120 m, wide 20 m and 15 m in height. It shows four towers of which one, the most Eastern one, is slightly higher than the others with a square base. It was built in 1595 by Philip Belcredi. The last and decisive improvements are the work of the current owners the Counts Balduino.
- The Parish Church of St. Augustine, built in Renaissance style;
- The Museum of Peasant Culture of Villa Illibardi, which exposes objects, tools and utensils used by local peasants in the past times.
