Magione

Description

The town's name refers to the hostel built by the Knights of the Temple to house and care pilgrims traveling through the area and derives from the Latin word "mansio" or French "maison" with the meaning of "home".
Magione is a town in the province of Perugia, located on a hill along the shore of Lake Trasimeno, on the border with the territory of the regional capital. In San Savino, on the South-east bank of Lake Trasimeno, is a green oasis: interesting are boat trips in the lake with its various opportunities to feel in direct contact with the surrounding nature, rich in fauna.
Probably of Etruscan origins, Magione was later colonized by the Romans. The first documented reports of the existence of a settlement date back to the second half of the XI century. The main center, originally known as Pian di Carpine, submitted the domain of the city of Perugia. Located along the route which served pilgrims going to Rome or Jerusalem, was chosen by the Templars to build a hospital, where first care was offered to those of need. When, in the XIV century, the order of the founders was dismissed, the hostel became a property of other orders. Under the Knights of Malta it became a monastery and then progressively was fortified.

Attractions:
- the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in the second half of the XVI century by the Knights of Malta and unfortunately damaged by the bombing during the Second World War, it was rebuilt after the war and features frescoes of the artist Dottori;
