Eraclea

Description

Located on the Gulf of Eraclea, near Venice, it is a touristic resort of great natural interest for the presence of the Laguna del Mort, formed during an overflow and flood of the Piave. This stretch of water with a shallow bed is rich of fish, a resting place for several species of birds during their migrations and natural habitat for various types of plants.
The first settlement was founded in the early XVIII century, when the Venetian Republic granted these lands to Alvise Giustiniani Lolin, a Venetian nobleman, who had a church built here, around which, as often happened, a group of houses were constructed. During the period of French domain, Napoleon recognized a certain autonomy to its inhabitants, while under the rule of the Habsburgs, the territories were divided and assigned between the neighboring San Donà and Jesolo. In 1866 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy. Destroyed during the First World War, the town was slowly rebuilt. In the XIX century the surrounding area was reclaimed from the marshland, submerged by the waters of Lake of the Piave, and woods were cut down, to use this very fertile soil for the cultivation of crops, cereals, rice and grapes.
