Dolo

Description

There is no harmony of opinions about the origins of the town's name: for some historians it derives from the Latin name " Davus", while according to others, from the name of the family Dauli and, finally, according to another argument, to the fact that, in the XV century, these places were used as a place of confinement. Dolo is a town in the province of Venice, situated on both banks of the Naviglio, a minor branch of the Brenta, in the point where it divides and creates the "Isola Bassa" (Lower Island).
Although it is certain that the area was inhabited since ancient times, the town was founded in relatively recent ages. The center had a great development due to the presence of rivers that provide a quick connections between Venice and its hinterland and allowed the transportation of people and goods. With the growth of Venice, who conquered the territory in the XV century, also Dolo grew economically. Since the conquest of Napoleon until the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, the events that have affected the town were similar to those that affected the entire district.

Attractions:
- the Cathedral, entitled to San Rocco, was completed in 1776. It is an impressive classical-looking structure, the side entrances are located below the base of the pair of columns, which enrich both sides and sustain the front gable. Imposing is the central portal and the two side openings are embellished by two niches with statues, while another three statues mark the three angles of the tympanum. The nave's ceiling is decorated with paintings of the artist Cedini and XVIII century sculptures. The building is flanked by a XIX century Bell Tower, similar to the one of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Nogara and San Marco, presents a particular series of colors and fine nuances of light and shadow. The structure has a square base with belfry surmounted by a drum and a spire;
- the XVI century Villa Ferretti Angeli in the district of Sambruson and several other Venetian villas and noble palaces;
- the Squero, the XVI century shipyard;
- the Museum of Villano of Villas Badoer Fattoretto;
- the Mills.
