Capalbio
Description
Capalbio is a small medieval village set in the southern Tuscany, in the very heart of the Tuscan Maremma. The area was inhabited by the Etruscans and Romans, but the first document in which Capalbio is mentioned is the Leonino-Carolingia bull through which Charlemagne donated the Castle of the Three Fountains Abbey to Rome. Then it was conquered by the Aldobrandeschi family, Siena, the Spanish and Florence.
It is still possible to visit the medieval city walls and the Capalbiaccio castle, set on the north-western hill. The medieval Church of San Nicola, with beautiful frescoes is located at the tower foot. We also mention the Oratorio della Provvidenza, with XVI century frescoes, and the Nunziatella Chapel, set in the Fattoria della Nunziatella (Nunziatella Farm).
