Altavilla Monferrato
Description
Altavilla Monferrato is a small town of the Lower Monferrato area, set on the border between the provinces of Asti and Alessandria. It developed around a castle on a hill, on the right bank of the Grana river. In 1026, it became a possession of the Monastery of Novalesa; then it passed under the domain of the Marquis of Monferrato and, finally, of the Gonzagas from Mantua.
It is a centre with an agricultural vocation, famous for its wines. The Parish church of San Giulio preserves important masterpieces, such as the "Last Supper" by Moncalvo and the "Wedding of Cana" by Niccolò Musso.
